The 80/20 rule and how the Pareto Principle makes your life more successful

Get 80% of your results with just 20% of the effort. Crazy idea huh?! The 80/20 rule from Vilfredo Pareto states just that and I will explain how you can apply this yourself to become more succesful and accomplish more in your life.

The Pareto Principle

The Pareto Principle is an old principle that states that you can accomplish your goals with just 20% of your efforts and get 80% of the results. So to invest just 20% of your time in your goal, you should be able to achieve the other 80% of it. This combination is not that unlogical as it may seem. The 80/20 principle is a fairly known rule in foodie land where a lot of people eat a healthy and balanced diet 80% of the time and the remaining 20% of the week they allow themselves to indulge in the things they really love and may not be as healthy. And let me tell you this: 80% of all the salaries and income of this world is produced by and owned by 20% of the total world population.

How do you apply the Pareto Principle?

This all sounds really fun, but how can you use it yourself so that you can become more effective, productive, efficient and happier in your life? Ask yourself these 2 questions:

  • Which 20% of your current efforts result in 80% of your desired goals and happiness?
  • Which 20% of your current efforts result in 80% of your problems and not being happy?

The most easy way, though a bit confronting, is to journal for a week and write down what you exactly do with your time. Write down exactly what you do and how long it takes you. Yep, it is not always fun to see how much time you throw away and aren’t productive. But it is all for a good cause right? Because now you are willing to work on it and you are taking ownership of the fact that you want to manage your time in a more productive way.

Eliminate the time you waste

If you have written down where you spend your time on, you grab your highlighter and mark the time frames where you weren’t efficient. In this way, you can eliminate them and you can mark the most productive times of your week so that the become more visible. In this way you will learn that you are more productive on a certain time and you can schedule more challenging tasks to that timeslot. Or maybe you see that you spend a lot of time on your phone or email. Eliminate this by spending 1 hour a day on your phone. Put your phone away on other times and close your inbox.

Achieve your goals efficiently

There will always be things that you really need to do even if you don’t want to, but hey, that’s life. How awesome would it be though if you could achieve your goals more easy by working efficiently and stop doing the things that won’t bring you any further? Do you want to get amazing grades at school? Do you want to get that bonus at work? Do you want to grow your blog? Do you spend your time well to really achieve your desired goals?
